„Virtual History and Augmented Present”

As a rapidly expanding area of computer research, Augmented and Virtual Reality is characterised by a large degree of interdisciplinarity. The entanglement between the real world and computer generated data cuts across, and expands far beyond disciplines such as human-computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Graphics (CG), sensor systems, human-to-machine communication, and machine-to-machine communication on the one hand. But on the other hand questions like the origin of the data, or the impact of such media technologies on our perception and concept of reality is highly relevant in media studies, cultural history and theory, but also in archaeology, ethnology, museology or cultural heritage. Given this interdisciplinary context, one can translate the concept of Mixed Reality (Milgram, Takemura, Utsumi, & Kishino, 2005) or the seamless bridging of the physical and virtual worlds into the linkage between virtual history and augmented present. While the supposedly real is always mediated by natural or artificial senses/sensors having their own history, all we know about history is transmitted through media like images, texts, or archaeological findings, but also through vinyl records, films, or computer data. Hence, the representation of history and the contextualisation of the present are two sides of the same coin coming together in today’s media and computer technologies. With our 17thInternational Conference on Culture and Computer Science 2019, we want to address the multifaced bridges between virtual history and augmented reality.

The ”Culture and Computer Science“ conference series brings into focus best practice examples, challenges and future trends in the fields of Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality, hybrid systems, 3D technology, data collection and management, media integration, modelling, visualisation and interaction. The conference targets employees of cultural and creative industries, communication scientists, cultural and artistic actors as well as computer scientists and engineers, who conduct research and development on cultural topics.

The presentations will discuss the following key topics:

  • Hybrid systems;
  • Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality;
  • Best practice Augmented, Mixed or Virtual Reality applications;
  • Analogue and digital exhibition design;
  • Collections – Exploitation, design, exhibition and conveyance;
  • Crowd Sourcing technology and applications;
  • Influence of art and culture on future developments;
  • Intuitive usage of media systems;
  • Interdependence between culture and computer science;
  • Simulation;
  • Ethics in culture and computer science.

These items shall primarily be analysed, demonstrated and discussed through best practice examples for cultural and creative industries.

Further key aspects of the conference:

  • Technologies for hybrid systems;
  • Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality and Virtual Reality technologies;
  • ARCore and ARKit;
  • 3D technologies;
  • Digitalisation in the cultural and creative industries;
  • Visualisation and interaction technologies;
  • Interactive multimedia solutions for museums, theatres, concert halls, exhibitions etc.;
  • Digital exhibitions, science centres, museums and galleries;
  • Virtual reconstructions;
  • Location-based and context-sensitive services in a cultural context;
  • Documentation, visualisation and interaction in museums and archives;
  • Digital storytelling;
  • Multimedia guides with Augmented Reality components;
  • Ethical issues concerning the use of Virtual and Augmented Reality.
